I began making pornography for women because there was a need. And now I want to do something about the need for more women MPs

I'm Anna Arrowsmith, the Liberal Democrat PPC in Gravesend, or, as many know me, Anna Span, the first UK female porn director. Make your choice.

Since the news broke my selection on Thursday, many people have asked me why I want to be an MP. The answer is exactly the same reason I decided to start making pornography for women over 12 years. Someone had to do it and it appeared that nobody was going to - at least not with the drive, enthusiasm and determination they could offer. The sad truth is that there are very few female members in this country compared with the rest of the world.

Did you know that Rwanda has the highest number of women MPs from all countries with 53%? Imagine living in a country with a female majority! Well, here I am again thinking that another male dominated field needs a challenge.

In 1998 I was in the final year of my career, studying at Central St. Martin School of Art
